Hatters snap up Newport striker

The 31-year-old frontman has agreed a deal that keeps him at Kenilworth Road until the end of the current campaign, subject to international clearance from the Football Association of Wales and a medical.

McAllister, who is a 6ft 1in striker, joined Newport in the summer after helping Crawley Town win the Blue Square Bet Premier title last season, but failed to score for the Exiles in 26 appearances.

He netted 13 goals for the Red Devils last season, including a last-minute winner as the champions won 2-1 at Luton Town in October.

McAllister is unable to make his debut in tonight’s FA Trophy tie at Hinckley as he is cup-tied, but can feature, subject to international clearance, in the squad for Saturday’s trip to Southport.

Hatters boss Gary Brabin told the club’s official website: “Craig has proven quality in this division and in the division above and that record is hard to ignore.

“His goalscoring record at Crawley last season record speaks for itself but it’s not just that - his overall game, the little things you see in matches, is something which stands Craig apart.

“He’s adaptable in any role we play, he works hard, he’s strong and he chips in with his fair share of goals.

“I’m delighted that we’ve been able to bring in a player of Craig’s calibre and look forward to working with him between now and the rest of the season.”

Although born in Glasgow, McAllister was raised on the south coast of England and began his career with Eastleigh.

In 2002 he signed for Basingstoke Town, scoring 53 times in 96 appearances at the Camrose which earned him a move to Stevenage Borough.

First team opportunities were limited at Broadhall Way, he joined Woking in 2005 and went onto hit 23 goals in 83 games for the Cards.

Spells at Grays, Oxford and Exeter followed, while he has also spent time at Barnet and Rotherham United.
