Town managing director Gary Sweet revealed they’d had around 150 applications for the Kenilworth Road hotseat following ex-boss Paul Buckle’s surprise departure last Tuesday, writes Mark Wood.

The final decision really came down to a straight shoot-out between two candidates, with 62-year-old former Dagenham & Redbridge boss John Still getting the nod.

Sweet said: “The last count 150-odd and probably 30 or 40 decent ones.

“Clearly the filtering and sifting of applications was probably the heaviest task.

“We identified him anyway. So whoever applied probably wasn’t going to even get close.”

Appointing a manager who was already in charge of another club marks a change in tack for current custodians 2020.

First appointment Richard Money was only in charge of the youth section at Newcastle United, while Gary Brabin and Paul Buckle had both been out of work, and Sweet hopes this time they’ve got it right.
