Hatters reject Mariners claims of a ridiculous offer to Marshall

Luton Town have declared they won’t pay over the odds for any player – despite being accused of offering ‘ridiculous’ money for Bury winger Marcus Marshall, writes Mark Wood.

The 23-year-old wide man has impressed while on loan at Blue Square Bet Premier rivals Grimsby Town and Town’s interest has been met with a frosty reception from the Mariners.

On Marshall, who has been recalled by ex-Hatters boss Kevin Blackwell to the struggling League One Shakers, Luton manager Paul Buckle was tightlipped.

He said: “He is Bury’s player. I like him.

“We haven’t offered ridiculous money for any player. I think the words are a little bit flippant.”

Marshall has scored one goal in 10 league appearances for Grimsby during his two-month loan spell and has also appeared 11 times for Bury this term.

Town managing director Gary Sweet also downplayed Town’s pursuit, saying: “We have indeed made an enquiry, but we certainly haven’t offered silly money for any players during this transfer window.”

Luton have already pinched winger Scott Neilson from under the Mariners’ noses and been linked to other players who have been on loan at Blundell Park.

Grimsby joint boss Rob Scott told local media: “We’re fighting to keep Marcus but the offer that Luton have put in is ridiculous really.”
