Jonathan Smith: 5 - Stand-in right-back was given a torrid time by Almond but stuck to his task well.

Steve McNulty: 5.5 - Looked solid, but piqued the referee’s attention when he squared up to Hattersley and then sent off for an innocuous clash with George.

Solomon Taiwo: 4.5 - Booked for a poor challenge in the first half and was never really in the encounter.

Jake Howells: 4.5 - Never got the ball at his feet as rudderless Luton fired too many long balls forward in the first half.

Scott Griffiths: 5 - Average performance from the left-back without doing anything really wrong.

Mark Cullen: 5 - Struggled to make his mark on Southport’s well-drilled backline but busied them whenever possible.

David Martin: 5 - Direct approach caused Southport some concern, but was sacrificed to help shore up Luton’s defence.

Luke Guttridge: 6 - Covered plenty of yards, looked to win the ball at every opportunity and sprayed the odd good pass.

Shaun Whalley: 6 - Tried to do too much against his former employers and saw his penalty well saved, but still one of Luton’s livelier performers.

Alex Lacey: 6: The odd mistake couldn’t detract from an assured showing from Town’s young centre-half on his first league start.

Andre Gray (sub): 6: Made a real difference to the Hatters, missed a gilt-edged chance but won a penalty. Has to start.

Anthony Charles (sub): 5.5 - Experienced defender helped to shore up the Hatters’ defence.

Andrew Parry (sub): 5.5 - Forceful midfield showing from the youngster who made a real impact against his former club.
