Hatters looking at Dutch international?

THERE is nothing ‘cloak and dagger’ about a trialist striker – believed to be former Dutch international Romano Denneboom – according to Hatters boss Gary Brabin, writes Mark Wood.

The mystery forward played 45 minutes in Tuesday night’s 1-0 friendly victory over Hitchin Town, but struggled to make an impact at a bitterly cold Top Field.

Tight-lipped Luton chief Brabin said: “He was supposed to be down as just A Trialist.

“He is a player we’ve got a bit of hindsight on and someone we are going to have a look at.

“Nothing cloak and dagger but we just don’t want to mention anything too much at the moment.

“He is coming round and we are going to have a look at him for the next 10 days, two weeks, see how he is.

“He hasn’t played much football the last few months but has a good pedigree and we just thought it would be a good chance to have a look at him for 45 minutes.”

Denneboom, 30, has around 300 senior appearances to his name for Heerenveen, Willem II, NEC, Twente, Sparta Rotterdam and Arminia Bielefeld and made his one appearance for Holland in the 3-0 friendly win over Liechtenstein in 2004.

The free agent played alongside Edgar Davids, Wesley Sneijder and Edwin van der Sar in former coach Marco van Basten’s second game in charge.

Brabin has already signalled his intent to bring in a new striker following the departure of Collin Samuel.

And he revealed that other clubs are making it difficult for them to land their targets, adding: “One thing we have found is people are trying to make it hard for us whenever they find we are interested in players who might be getting released or on a free transfer.

“All of a sudden they’ve got a figure on their head.

“It’s something we are looking at and it’s still only early days. He is a player who has come over and we’ve got a bit of inside knowledge on.

“We want to see where he is fitness wise and whether he is ready to step into our first team or not and will take a look at him over the next couple of weeks.”
