Hatters look to play their Cards right for another FA Cup run

Experienced Hatters striker Paul Benson would love to help Luton replicate their magic FA Cup run of last season as Town head to Woking in fourth round qualifying on Saturday, writes Mark Wood.

The Hatters shocked Premier League Norwich City and Championship Wolverhampton Wanderers on their way to the fifth round last season, before eventually succumbing to Millwall.

And that was further than the 34-year-old striker has ever gone in the competition, as he said: “I’ve had a couple of runs, the furthest I’ve been is the fourth round. I’m well aware that the club did tremendously in it last year.

“So we’ve got a lot to live up to with this year’s cup run. Hopefully we can and it starts next week so we’ll be really looking forward to it because they can produce some fantastic moments in a season like they did last year.

“So let’s hope we can replicate it.”

Midfielder Andy Parry would also love a run in the premier cup competition, but knows the Cards will be no pushovers.

He said: “Everyone loves a cup competition. It’s different from any other games, especially in the FA Cup.

“But we’ve just got to treat it as a normal game. They’re going to be right up for it, but we’ve just got to there and get a win.”

Town triumphed 4-0 at the Kingfield last month, but the former Southport man doesn’t think it will have any bearing.

“No not at all, it’s a cup game and every game’s different,” he warned.

“You could play them every single week and each game would be different, so you’ve just got to go there and take what comes.”

Town chief John Still is relishing the occasion too, as he said: “It’s a game for me and I just love the games. I just want to play the games, want to watch the games, want to be involved in the games.

“Win, lose or draw I just love the games. FA Cup, it’s great, let’s see what we do with that.”

Target man Benson missed out on the Woking rout last month as Mark Cullen took centre stage in the game with a brace and the experienced striker is hoping he’s done enough to keep his place after his double at the weekend helped the Hatters to triumph 4-3 at Tamworth.

He said: “Hopefully if I’m selected then I’ll go out and look to do the my best that I can for the team first and foremost and then if goals come off the back of that then that’s what I’m looking for, but I need to be selected first.”

But with the Hatters eight games unbeaten in the league and looking to close the eight-point gap on Cambridge at the top, the tie may not have come at the best moment.

Benson added: “Not when we are on the run we are. We are in a good run of form, we are picking up some points and we’re really starting to move forward.

“Maybe a break isn’t the best thing to have at the moment, but it’s the FA Cup and every footballer likes to play in the FA Cup.”
