Hatters fans can swamp nervous York at Wembley

BOGEY side York City are likely to be the more nervous of the two teams when Luton Town and York City clash at Wembley on Sunday, May 20, according to managing director Gary Sweet, writes Mark Wood.

Town’s support is expected to outnumber the Minstermen’s by at least two to one and Sweet believes City are in the more difficult position despite having held sway over the Hatters in recent years.

Town’s hoodoo has seen them lose three times to York this season, twice in the league and once in the FA Trophy as City scored a late equaliser in the second leg of the competition to deny Luton another Wembley final.

Sweet said: “I think they will be the more nervous of the two.

“We’ve got to remain confident but then we are playing York. I don’t want to pay York too much respect.

“We’ve played them four times already this season and come off worse overall, but we are a different team now.

“We are a different team to the one that played previously and I think they will show that.”

Sweet has been buoyed by the impact made by new manager Paul Buckle since taking charge, winning five, drawing two and losing one game.

He continued: “We’ve got absolute faith in him.

“The past few games have proved we were right to give our support to him and we will continue to do that.”

Just like last year’s play-off final at the City of Manchester Stadium, the Hatters have had no control over ticket prices but are doing their best to get young supporters to the game.

Sweet added: “There is nothing the club can do. We tried to do everything we could to reduce tickets and make it easy to purchase them.

“We are spending a lot of time and effort to get everyone down to Wembley.

“If any concession below 16 buys a ticket they can get that money off a season ticket next season.

“We are trying to do what we can to ease the expense of the extra burden of cost.”
