“Obviously Shaun’s going to go on, I think a deal has been done in principle for Shaun to go to Luton.

“He’ll go on to have a really, really good career there and hopefully he’ll be the next one to move up the pyramid quite rapidly.”

Whalley’s face adorned the Southport programme at the weekend as he won the supporters’ player of the season award after a campaign that saw him net nine league goals.

The 25-year-old midfielder who has played for Wrexham, Accrington and Chester also scored 10 league goals the previous season and Town boss John Still exclusively confirmed to the News/Gazette he is on the verge of signing, along with his team-mate Parry.

Parry, 21, has made over 50 appearances at Haig Avenue and scored Southport’s goal at Kenilworth Road this season.

He was released by Blackburn Rovers in the summer of 2011, where he played as a central defender, but established himself at Southport as a central midfielder.
