Hatters to come up smelling of Roses?

STAR Newport County player Danny Rose has been linked with a move to the Hatters, writes Mark Wood.

Reports in Wales connected the midfielder to the Kenilworth Road outfit after the Exiles agreed to sell him to an undisclosed club, pending a medical and agreeing personal terms. Boss Justin Edinburgh said this week: “We wish Danny all the best.”

The 23-year-old had a week’s trial at Championship club Crystal Palace in October. League Two sides Aldershot Town, managed by former County boss Dean Holdsworth, and Northampton Town, plus Luton’s Blue Square Bet promotion rivals Fleetwood Town have also been linked with his signature.

Chairman Chris Blight would not be drawn on who the club was, saying: “We’ve had several clubs making enquiries for Danny and the actual agreement was achieved on Friday. It is subject to several things at the moment, one of them being a medical and terms being agreed and the agreement is that it will be confidential for now.”

“Let’s be realistic about this, Danny has always wanted to get into the Football League. That’s his objective and we wouldn’t stand in his way. It’s very nice actually that over the last few years we’ve had players who have been assets to us. They are financially valuable and in such a dire season where we are seeing crowds down to just over a thousand at the last game then things like this have to be taken into consideration. The overheads are just the same whether you’ve got a thousand people coming through the turnstiles or 2,000.

“We budgeted for an awful lot more than we’ve been getting and look where we are.”

Recent reports in the north have also claimed Luton are likely to renew their interest in Gateshead striker, and Conference top scorer, Jon Shaw in the new year.
