Town boss John Still told the club’s website: “Alex has had a great year and I have been really pleased with his contribution since I have been at the club.

“I’ve been really pleased with his quality and really pleased with his attitude, too. These are all components that we’re going to need to be successful.

“The fact that League One clubs wanted him – and I’m aware of who those clubs are – is a fantastic testament to what he thinks of Luton Town.

“He’s got a great association with this club and I think in his mind he’s thinking ‘I’ve been here three years and if I leave now it might be the best time, and I don’t want miss out on that’.

“That’s what I sold to him and naturally we’re delighted to have him on board for the next two years.”

Lawless held discussions with two League One clubs before committing his future to the Hatters.

The 28-year-old has recovered from a mixed start since signing from York City to become a regular in Luton midfield, having scored 12 times in 124 appearances.
