After Town were beaten 1-0 at Southport, he said: “I’m expecting another very tough, bitty game.

“I’m not sure how good or bad they may be. What we’ve got to do is make sure everyone on the pitch and the subs, whoever plays, perform to a level we know we can.

“We haven’t got to worry about anyone else, we’ve got to worry about ourselves and if we do our job properly, we’ll win more games than we lose.

“We’re going to have to fight tooth and nail. If you don’t work hard and match the other teams desire, then I don’t think you’re going to achieve anything.”

A bumper crowd is expected for Town’s first home game of the season and Guttridge was eager to repay Luton’s supporters, particularly those who had travelled to Merseyside at the weekend.

He added; “They have been absolutely brilliant since I’ve been here and I’ve never had that my career, where you get that sort of fanbase.

“It’s all well and good them coming (to Southport), but we need to start performing as players on the pitch and start rewarding them for their efforts, because it’s certainly not good enough.”
