Griffiths surprised to land Hatters deal

New Luton signing Scott Griffiths admitted he was surprised to land a new club before the end of the season after leaving Championship outfit Peterborough United in January, writes Mark Wood.

But he believes he is fit enough to play a role for Luton this term and just needs a bit of match sharpness.

He said: “It was definitely a bit of a weird time (to sign). Me leaving Peterborough, I thought I might just have to keep myself fit ‘til the start of next season and then find a club.

“I never really expected anything to come up at this stage. There’s just enough time to get to know everybody before the start of next pre-season.

“So when I came back at the start of next pre-season nothing’s difficult or awkward and I’m not the new face who doesn’t know anyone.

“I’ve been working hard on my fitness. I know match fitness is different, but I’ve been working hard with longer distance running and swimming to stay in shape.”

Griffiths admitted boss John Still played a big part in his move to Kenilworth Road and revealed he was surprised and glad to see a familiar face in fellow former Dagenham & Redbridge man Solomon Taiwo.

“I know a couple of the lads and I’ve played at Luton a few times so I know what the ground’s like,” he said.

“I know Solomon Taiwo from Dagenham. I more know of Stuart Fleetwood from the Forest Green days and playing against him at Exeter.

“Everybody seems nice enough and it’s a bonus having some of the staff such as John Still and Terry Harris from Dagenham.”

“It’s a bit weird with me and football, When I’m with a team I only pay attention to my own team and have little attention to what is going on at other teams and other leagues.

“When it comes to player knowledge I’m pretty bad. It was nice to see a friendly face there (Taiwo). I’ve known him for a while and know what he is capable of so that’s encouraging.”

Griffiths, who was initially a regular at London Road following his move from the Daggers, has more recently had to cope with a series of loan moves.

His aims for the rest of the season though are simple, as he continued: “For myself I want to get as much strength and fitness in me as possible.

“Try and play as many games as possible to get to know how the lads work, how the team works and next season is a massive push for promotion.

“With the right people John Still’s got experience of Conference promotion as do I.”

And he hinted the fitness and conditioning coach that is set to join the Hatters will have a real impact, adding: “Someone that I have a feeling may be joining us with strength and fitness who I go to - he was a big part in promotion for us.”
