The recent signing gave an assured performance at left back, his first start since a spell on loan at League Two Plymouth Argyle earlier in the campaign.

Griffiths said: “It was much better to play in than to watch on Saturday (5-1 defeat to Gateshead).

“The communication was better, it was a better result and I was happy with my performance for a first 90 minutes in a proper competitive game since October.

“I’d been keeping fit in between teams, but match fitness a valuable thing, so it was nice to finish a 90 with energy left.

“The lads were good, they spoke to me, not that I need talking through things, but it’s good to know you’ve got vocal players around you and you can trust them.”

Despite Town’s humiliation at Gateshead on Saturday, Griffiths felt it was important they didn’t get too downbeat and with that in mind, wasn’t going over the top on beating Lincoln either.

He continued: “If we can get that into the players, not to get too low when we lose, learn the lessons and move on. It’s like when we win a game, we’re not the best team in the world, but it’s important to take on board what you’ve done right.

“Don’t go getting over-excited, but I believe very much, if you don’t ever get yourself too high, and then don’t put yourself down too much otherwise you’ll destroy yourself.”

Griffiths is expected to retain his place for Grimsby’s visit tonight, althouhh there will be an enforced chance to the defence with Ronnie Henry having undergone a hernia operation.

He said: “In any back four, it doesn’t matter who’s playing as long as you talk to each other.

“It was nice to play with Ronnie the other night as I know he’s a decent player. As long as we get four defenders who know what they’re doing, it shouldn’t be a problem.

“They know what they’re doing on the ball and know when to go and win their headers. When you’ve got someone solid alongside you and in front of you, who can do a job, it can make life a bit easier.”

Tuesday night was Griffiths’ first experience of the Kenilworth Road crowd behind a winning side and he has urged supporters to play their part to the full.

He added: “When they want to get behind the team, they can get behind the team.

“It was a very poor performance Saturday and the crowd were right to be annoyed and frustrated with us. Although I didn’t play, I’m part of the team so still want to take responsibility, but when we need them behind us, there are lot of fans there to back us up.

“If they really get together and gee us on, it’s like having a 12th player and such a good feeling to have them behind us.”
