Gray not looking to leave Luton

Town striker Andre Gray isn’t giving any thought to speculation about his future during the January transfer window, writes Mike Simmonds.

The 21-year-old has been Luton’s stand out player in recent weeks with some eye-catching performances, and the club are desperate to keep hold of his services to spearhead their promotion push.

It is inevitable his impressive form will attract attention, but when asked if it would affect him, Gray said: “I don’t pay any attention to it. I’ve seen a lot of people let that get to them and it’s affected their performance, but I’m not that kind of person to let anything like that get to me.

“I stay humble and keep my mouth shut as nothing is going to happen in January. I’m happy here and enjoying my football and want to keep working hard.”

Although keen to play as high as he possibly can, Gray is confident he can do it with Luton, as he continued: “I think that’s like anybody, but it’s not something I’ve thought about or will be thinking about.

“All I’ve got in my mind now is to get promoted with this club and then what happens after that, happens, whether we’re in League Two or still in the Conference.

“But I’m confident we’ll get promoted and then we’ll see where we are after that.”

Gray has been a revelation since finally returning to a more natural striking position as his fine blast against Woking on New Year’s Day made it six goals in his last seven starts.

Now charged with scoring goals, rather than creating them while out on the wing, the forward is fast becoming one of the first names on the teamsheet.

Speaking about his positional change, he said: “I played upfront last season and did well, but I’ll play anywhere as long as I’m playing, it’s not a problem.

“Stats do say that I play better upfront, but it doesn’t really matter as long as I’m playing and scoring or assisting and doing something for the team, I’m happy.

“I still want to do better and think I can do a lot better and do more for the team, I’ve just got to keep practising and get better.”

Town have already made two acquisitions since the transfer window opened and Gray thinks there will be a few more as his side look to mount a serious title charge in the second half of the season.

He added: “Every team needs tuning no matter what, even the top teams, they need players to give that little bit extra.

“We’ll probably bring some players in, we’ve got Scotty Neilson and Smudge (Jonathan Smith) and they are great assets to our team and are going to benefit us.”
