The Knitters were wound up by the High Court over debts of more than £200,000, much to Gray’s disappointment.

Grateful Gray, who Luton signed for Hinckley in March 2012, said: “They gave me the platform and got me to where I am now.

“Obviously it was a hard time leaving Shrewsbury and getting a club, but Hinckley gave me my chance with their manager.

“And it was the same when I first went there I wasn’t playing as much and then the second season I kicked on and it obviously helped me get my move here.

“So it’s obviously disappointing to see them go down because they’re a great little club.”

The Calor Southern League Premier Division boasted great facilities in the form of their ground, De Montfort Park, and Gray was surprised to see them go to the wall.

He said: “I was quite surprised to be honest because it is one of the biggest clubs in that league considering the stadium.

“But it’s football and there’s nothing we can do about it now.”

But he’s hopeful there could still be a future for a phoenix club, adding: “It’s a great club, and they’ve got great facilities and the stadium’s worth more than what it’s been getting.

“Hopefully they can bounce back and get back to where they was when I left.”
