Gray disappointed by Town axe

The 21-year-old, who was Town’s leading scorer with 20 goals last term, had finally got off the mark for the season during Tuesday night’s 4-0 thrashing of Woking.

But manager John Still opted to go with a fit-again Paul Benson and the in-form Mark Cullen at Edgar Street as Gray said: “I want to play every week but obviously it’s the manager’s decision and I respect that. It’s frustrating, but it’s a team game and we’ve been doing well.”

Oddly, it was at the other end where Gray had the biggest impact in his 20 minutes on the pitch as twice he cleared goalbound shots off the line.

The striker was relieved that his recent goal drought was over and almost snatched victory for Town, but didn’t go to ground despite being caught by Chris Bush, eventually firing into the side-netting.

On Luton’s goalless draw at Edgar Street, Gray added: “It was a difficult game to play. They’re a big strong team, they don’t do anything special, but do the easy things right.

“We were unlucky not to nick it, so I think when we look back at the end of season, we’ll take that as a good point.”
