Gray believes Hatters are perfectly placed to push on

The Hatters sit eight points behind local rivals Cambridge United with a third of the season gone and a win at Tamworth on Saturday could provide them with a real springboard to push on.

Gray said: “If we get that win we’ve put ourselves in the perfect position and can really kick on. It’s going to be tough but we’ve got more than enough to do it.”

Town are seven games unbeaten after Saturday’s 4-1 win over lowly Hyde and Gray is unconcerned by the start the unbeaten U’s have enjoyed.

He said: “We just need to keep winning. I don’t think we need to worry about them.

“Everyone’s seen it two seasons ago with Wrexham being 15-20 points clear of Fleetwood and Fleetwood winning it by 10 points.

“It’s not a problem for us, we only need to worry about ourselves, because no-one’s going to win all of their games throughout the whole season.

“As long as we get that consistency and start beating the teams in and around us and below us, we’ll be flying and I think we’ll do it.

“Everyone’s confident, everyone’s firing, everyone’s scoring. We’re in the perfect stead, the perfect position, we don’t have to look behind us and we’re not really having to look in front of us.

“It’s just a case of worrying about ourselves, so if we keep ourselves right we’ve got no reason not to go on and win it.”

The Lambs, who have former Town defender Wayne Thomas in their ranks, are sitting just two points above the relegation zone after an indifferent start to the campaign.

They have lost two of their last three games at home, but defender Scott Griffiths isn’t underestimating Tamworth’s threat.

He said: “They’re never actually an easy team to play against. I’m hoping we take a good support and everone’s on it with a strong focus.

“We need to go there knowing we have to have a strong work ethic and a willingness to win and make sure we know how to win.”

On the gap between Luton and Cambridge, Griffiths added: “We just play the games and whatever happens happens. We can only control what we do, if other teams slip up, great, you can only affect what’s around you, so there’s no point worrying about them.”
