Gateshead chairman insists Shaw was never going to Luton

TOWN’s transfer window pursuit of Gateshead goal machine Jon Shaw was never going to be a viable option according to the Tynesiders chairman Graham Wood, writes Mike Simmonds.

Luton boss Gary Brabin upped his bid to sign the forward, who has netted 23 times in the Blue Square Bet Premier, but it was rejected by Gateshead, who are currently eighth in the table, just two points away from the play-offs.

Wood said: “Shaw was not for sale. He has scored 29 goals this season and if you want to get back into the Football League you do not sell your top scorer to one of your rivals.”

Meanwhile, it has emerged that Town turned down an offer for Godfrey Poku from Conference rivals Southport.

Poku completed a three-month loan deal with the Sandgrounders recently and boss Liam Watson said about his transfer activity: “That’s five new faces at the club, and it could have been more, had our financial offer for Godfrey Poku been accepted by Luton Town.”
