Former Town star Martin earns Scotland call-up

The 25-year-old, who scored 14 goals in 51 games for Luton during 2008-09, including netting in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy final win over Scunthorpe United, was born in England, but his father was born in Scotland.

Martin played four times for England U19s, scoring two goals, but Scotland boss Gordon Strachan has been impressed with his link-up play with Derby midfielder Craig Bryson, who has also been called up.

He said: “Chris Martin would have been in the squad the last time, but unfortunately we couldn’t get the clearance from Fifa in time.

“He’s got a physical presence, but he’s a footballer. He’s not the quickest, but he’s got a quick mind, he sees people in, he scores goals and, when the ball comes up to him, it very rarely goes back the other way.

“When you look at the link-up between him and Bryson, I think it’s 40-odd goals they’ve scored between them. It’s a smashing partnership.”

Meanwhile, Martin told the Derby Telegraph: “I spoke to Scotland manager Gordon Strachan a few times earlier this year and I’m glad he has seen enough in me to give me this opportunity.

“It is an honour for me although it has been a little while to get to this stage. There was talk of me being in the last squad but clearance didn’t come from FIFA in time.

“I am glad to get that sorted.

“It has been a really memorable season and I’ve really enjoyed it.

“Hopefully, there are one or two more high moments to come.”
