Focused Fleetwood knows the job’s not yet done

FOCUSED striker Stuart Fleetwood knows the job is far from done as the Hatters head to Wales for the second leg of their play-off semi-final on Monday, writes Mark Wood.

Town put in a fantastic performance to vanquish the Red Dragons 2-0 at Kenilworth Road on Thursday night, with both Fleetwood and Andre Gray on target, but Luton’s top scorer knows they must again be on their mettle if they are to book a Wembley final.

However, he is hopeful that the scenario will play into Luton’s hands, saying “It’s half time. To go up there they are going to pack it out with all their fans and they’ve got nothing to lose now. They can come and attack us. But I think that might suit us. We can play on the counter-attack and hopefully get a few more goals.”

A number of Town’s stars have experienced the cut and thrust of play-off football and Fleetwood believes that will help. But he is also adamant that they can’t go there just to defend.

He continued: “I think a lot of us have experienced it before and you know what you are getting out of it and we know exactly what the game’s going to be like up there.

“It will be very similar to what it is like today. They are going to be direct and play three strikers rather than the two that they played tonight and they are going to come at us and have nothing to lose. We will wait and see, but we will go there with the same attitude we would have if we were 2-0 down and we are going to go and try and win the game.”

And he admitted he would much rather be in Town’s position than Wrexham’s, adding: “I’ve obviously played in it with Hereford, but we played away first leg and then at home second leg.

“Obviously we’ve turned it into an advantage tonight by getting the lead. I would much rather have a lead than having to chase one.

“We’ve got something to protect and they’ve got nothing to lose so I’m sure it will be a cracking game like it was tonight and if we can even have half the performance we will be OK.”
