Fleetwood impressed by Town’s patience

TOWN striker Stuart Fleetwood was impressed with his side’s new found patience during their 3-0 win over Ebbsfleet on Tuesday night, writes Mike Simmonds.

The Hatters had found themselves denied by visiting keeper Tom McNeil, who had a storming display, on numerous occasions during the opening period but rather than get frustrated, as has been all too apparent in recent matches, they held their nerve to score just before half time.

Fleetwood said: “We definitely needed a goal before half time. We had peppered them all the first half. Their keeper pulled off a couple of great saves, but we kept plugging away and a couple of weeks ago, we might not have got that goal and heads might have gone down.

“Luckily, it just fell for me in the box. I got up and won a header, it hit Robbie (Willmott) in the face and just fell at my feet.

“They’re the sort of goals strikers feed off, the instinct ones where you just have to put your foot through it.”

The second goal was always going to be crucial too and Fleetwood notched his 15th of the campaign a mere 40 seconds after the interval to kill off the visitors.

The forward continued: “I think that goal definitely took the wind out of them. We wanted a quick start and knew once we got that goal we could go on and get a few more.

“It could have been a lot more, we had a lot of good chances and the keeper made couple of good saves.

“We knew if we worked as hard as they do and harder, we were always going to come out on top as we’ve got some great players here.

“I think if our work-rate is up to scratch, we’re a match for anyone in this league.”

Town host Kidderminster tomorrow afternoon and Fleetwood is hoping the fans continue to make Kenilworth Road a positive place to play for the home side, after the negativity surrounding the last few games under previous boss Gary Brabin.

He added: ““We can hear a lot of stuff on the pitch when it does get negative which is deserved after some of our performances at home this season.

“It can get to the lads sometimes as your only human, but since the performances have changed, the fans have changed.

“It’s only right they expect the best and the last few games we’ve given them that.”
