Fleetwood hoping for injection of confidence ahead of Stockport trip

Town striker Stuart Fleetwood believes his side need a massive injection of confidence if they are going to stand any chance of making the play-offs this season, writes Mike Simmonds.

Hatters go into tomorrow’s trip to Stockport County a depressing 14 points off the play-offs and are without a win in their last nine Blue Square Bet Premier away games.

Since Town won 2-1 at Forest Green Rovers on October 27, they have lost six from those nine, taking three points from a possible 27, scoring just six times, including once in their last five matches.

Overall, Luton are on a sequence of six losses from eight league and cup matches too as Fleetwood said: “Confidence is a big part of it. I don’t think enough of us are on our game, myself included, I don’t put myself out of that at all.

“The new manager is in now, and we’re going to see who we wants to play in training.

“We know how close it is and if we can put a run of results together we’ll be back in there.

“That’s our main aim. We know that we need to be in the play-offs this year and if we fall outside that we know it’s very poor from us and we only have ourselves to blame.

“We’re under no illusions that’s our aim and we’ve got to keep going.

“I don’t think (poor form) is just away from home, I think it’s home as well.

“Once you get in that rut it can be difficult to get out of. If you could put your finger on it then it would be easy to stop and there would be a miracle cure for it.

“We need to turn it around quickly. We’ve definitely got the players here. We just need to have it out with each other, have a chat with each other, get on the same page and start playing as a team.”

Fleetwood was hoping that new boss John Still would bring some much needed belief to the side as he added: “He’s very positive, he spoke to us in the changing room and told us what he wants from us.

“We haven’t been with it. We’ve been very disappointing, but we need to turn it around with a better performance and go from there.

“I don’t think we care how we win as long as we do win, it needs to come very quickly and as soon as possible.”
