Fleetwood backs Town to make second round

Town have a great chance of making the second round of the FA Cup this weekend according to striker Stuart Fleetwood, writes Mike Simmonds.

Hatters host fellow Conference side Nuneaton Town who are bottom of the Conference and have gone 11 league games without a win. Fleetwood said: “No disrespect to them, but it’s a massive opportunity to get into the second round.

“We’ll approach it as a league game and the manager said at the start of the season he wanted a cup run, so we’re going to try our best and it’s a big opportunity for us.

“They probably won’t like coming to us and would have wanted an easier draw. Everyone is expecting us to win and we will as well.”

Town narrowly edged past their opponents in the league this month in what was an insipid display, only brightened up by Alex Lawless’ late double.

Fleetwood himself was suspended for the clash, but watched on from the gantry while commentating for the radio and believes he could have picked up some hints from his viewpoint.

He added: “You can see a few frailties when you’re a bit higher up. But when you’re on the pitch, you go into auto pilot and your mind takes over. I thought they played quite well. They tried to move it and were quite direct, it was a tough game and two great goals from Alex Lawless.

“We know we can beat them, so it’s up to us to really put on a show, score a couple of goals and look as stable as we have in the last couple of weeks.”
