Fit-again Taylor presses his case for a Town recall

QUICK healer Greg Taylor is looking to press his claims for a first-team recall after finally recovering from a mystery groin injury, writes Mark Wood.

Having exhausted all avenues of solving the problem the ex-Darlington full-back eventually had to go under the knife.

He said: “It was a completely unexpected injury.

“It happened at half time in the Darlington game and was quite difficult to work out what it was the first week.

“We thought it just might be a muscle strain because of the throw-ins I’d been taking.

“The more time that went on we thought maybe it’s not that.

“We started to move me about a little bit and work out where the pain was coming from before being seen by Mr (David) Lloyd, who does the Lloyd Release and that’s what I got eventually.

“It goes into the groin and affects all your lower abdominal muscles.

“So twisting, turning, any kind of movement, mainly in the core area, that’s where you get the pain.

“We thought it was a hernia but it was a sportsman’s groin which is similar.

“He did say it would take 10 days to get jogging and a further 10 days to be training.

“As soon as I had it done, he said I could go out and play football if I wanted to, it’s never going to break.

“But the swelling and the pain I’ve got to work around that and see how I feel.

“I’ve worked really hard with the physio and managed to do it a lot quicker than we thought.”

The injury came at a bad time for Taylor though with the play-offs looming and he knows he will have to impress new boss Paul Buckle whenever he gets the chance.

Taylor, 22, who has played 20 times, finally made his first appearance when he came off the bench during Tuesday night’s 0-0 draw at Gateshead, but speaking prior to that, added: “It was very disappointing because I thought I was doing well.

“I feel like I’ve got a lot more to give as well. It’s probably been my best season so far and it was quite disappointing because I hadn’t had any injuries.

“I’ve kept myself quite fit and with the new manager coming in I thought it would be quite difficult with team selection as he might not have seen me play.

“But I’ve just knuckled down and got myself fit, that’s all you can do and I’m ready to be selected.

“It does put a little bit of pressure on yourself to get back fit.

“I think the assistant manager, Neils (Alan Neilson), and Cards (Paul Carden) made him (Paul Buckle) aware of what I can do.

“Then it’s up to me to go on the pitch and show what I can do.”
