Fatigue will be no issue for Hatters assert Benson and Henry

Veteran striker Paul Benson is determined there will be no excuses about fatigue from the Hatters despite the quick turnaround for this afternoon’s visit of Kidderminster, writes Mark Wood.

The game comes less than 48 hours after the 2-1 Boxing Day victory at Barnet and the 34-year-old target man admitted he has rarely had so little rest between games.

He said: “There’s not many times in your career you will play a game two days after you’ve played your last one.

“I think I’ve only done it in my career once, possibly twice, so it’s not ideal.

“You don’t get much time to recover and rest up, but it’s just another hurdle you’ve got to overcome if you want to be successful.

“So there will be no excuses from me, even though I’m 34!”

The match marks the middle of five games in just 15 days over the festive period, but features the shortest space of time between matches.

However, Benson is keen on the traditionally busy Christmas period, saying: “That’s why we play, that’s why we’re involved in the game, that’s why we all love it because of these games that come thick and fast over Christmas.

“People like to come and watch these games, people enjoy it and the fact that it’s hotting up at the top of the table will add an extra little bit of spice to it, but we’ll be ready for Kidderminster don’t worry about that and hopefully another three points.”

Speaking after Thursday’s victory at the Hive, skipper Ronnie Henry was hopeful Town’s fans would help them overcome any tiredness.

He said: “We’ll go home now, have a rest, and come in training in the morning, hopefully not do a lot, but then we’ve got a big game at home against Kidderminster and all the fans will be there behind us and we’ll be ready for it.

“They’ll get us ready for the game tomorrow and we’ll look forward to it.”

The visit of the Harriers will also be Luton’s first game since Jonathan Smith suffered his horrific double leg break at Barnet on Thursday.

Henry admitted he will need to help lift his team-mates, but believes they can all play a part.

He said: “I’ve got a responsibility, but these lads know what they want and they’re heading in the right direction.”

And he has full faith in whoever replaces Smith, adding: “In there play maybe Matt Robinson, maybe he’s come on and might stand a chance now of playing more regularly.

“I do my bit in there, but the lads are very level-headed, they know what they want and they’re an easy bunch to manage to be honest with you.”
