
The 26-year-old put in a combative performance in Saturday’s 0-0 draw at title favourites Forest Green Rovers, before seeing his side held to a stalemate by Cambridge United on Monday too.
He said: “The things that I’ve noticed over the years at the start, no-one knows much about each other so you’ve just got to try and grind results out.
“You’re not going to be flying from the start of the season. It’s just important to get results and battle. Although it’s only a draw. we’ve got to take the positives from that.”
Smith was also full of praise for the performance of midfield partner Luke Guttridge who has impressed in every game since signing from Northampton Town in the summer.

He said: “I thought Luke put in a right shift and I think you could probably see he was frustrated he didn’t get as much of the ball.
“But I thought all the team worked really hard and that will stand us in good stead if we keep that sort of work-rate up.”
