The 23-year-old Guinea-Bissau international joined the Hatters initially on loan from Macclesfield Town in October 2012, before signing permanently in January.

However, he fell out of favour at Kenilworth Road after an unspecified breach of discipline as boss John Still declared he wouldn’t play again for the club.

He relented briefly as Mendy played in the goalless draw at Staines Town in November, his 29th appearance for the club, before being released in late December as he returned home to France due to personal reasons.

Imps boss Gary Simpson, who missed out on a loan deal for Luton winger Shaun Whalley, said: “We have Arnaud in this week, he is training with us and we will have a good look at him and see where he is fitness wise.

“He hasn’t done a lot since he left Luton, so we have had him in this week. We also have one or two more coming in next week to have a look at.

“We have had knock-backs on our bids for two midfield players, they’ve decided they don’t want to sell them, so at least we know where we are.

“It depends on how he (Arnaud) does in the next couple of days. It’s a big ask (playing on Saturday) to be fair, to chuck him in.

“He did a bit of work yesterday on his own and he will be in today and tomorrow. We will take stock of it, I am trying to get a game arranged for next week but the weather is going against us. Whether we can do that or not we don’t know.”
