Duo talk up Hatters’ runaway potential

No team will run away with the Blue Square Bet Premier title this season - unless it’s the Hatters according to keeper Mark Tyler and winger Dan Walker, writes Mark Wood.

Walker, who made his first appearance of the season in Saturday’s 0-0 draw against Wrexham, said: “I see it being wide open unless we take it.

“That’s the things that’s proven positive for us.

“It’s one of the best starts we’ve had for the last three or four years in this league and we still haven’t really hit the ground running.

“We’re grinding a few results out and we were unlucky against Telford.

“Alfreton was a bit of a disappointment, but other than that we’ve had some good performances.

“I wouldn’t say we’re flying yet and yet we are still up there and two points off the top so it’s good.

“We know if we can get a good run going we can hopefully do the same as the likes of Fleetwood or Crawley.”

Tyler concurred, saying: “It’s tight. Macclesfield have been at the top and we beat them here 4-1.

“Obviously Dartford are the surprise package at the moment, but we are in a good position.

“Yes we know we could be top by a few points. We gave away some silly points and the two defeats.

“Telford, if we were still here now we probably couldn’t score in that game but not for the want of creating chances.

“I think Alfreton was just a rare blip. Yes it is tight, but we’re in the mix, one win and we could be top Friday.

“Hopefully we’ll be the runaway team this year. We’re full of confidence, we won’t shy away from any game.

“I know people coming here (Kenilworth Road) will make it tough for us but I can’t see us losing many here.

“We started brilliantly away from home, won three out of four and hopefully we can pick up a few more wins and go from there.”

Both are prepared for Friday night’s trip to Grimsby as Walker said: “There’s a lot of big names in the Conference in terms of teams that have been in the League and dropped out of the League.

“Grimsby are up there as well but we know if we turn up. Our away record this season, other than Alfreton, we’ve been doing really well.

“So we know if we go there and play how we can we will get the result we need.”

Tyler, meanwhile, is hopeful the Hatters can celebrate victory with a fish and chip supper.

He added: “That’s down to Neils (Alan Neilson), you’ll have to ask him, he gets the food in after the games.

“We had a good result there last year so we will go there full of confidence.

“We’ve got another good week’s training ahead of us and like I said it’s something to build on from a clean sheet.

“If we can get Rens (Scott Rendell), Shawy (Jon Shaw), Andre (Gray) and Fleets (Stuart Fleetwood) on fire what a great strikeforce that is.

“As long as we do our job at the back they can score goals for fun and hopefully we’ll come back with all three points.

“If we are rock solid here (Kenilworth Road) and pick up some wins on the road I think we will be OK.”
