Departing duo pay tribute to Town fans

Both Janos Kovacs and James Dance were full of praise for Luton Town and their supporters, despite being told they would have no future at the club next season, writes Mark Wood.

Fans favourite Kovacs was a reluctant leaver from Kenilworth Road and said: “The football club, what they gave me, especially the fans, was so fantastic.

“I say thanks a lot to the fans, to my team-mates and to the staff, I worked with - all the memories through my time and really just thanks everyone at the football club.

Dance endured a miserable spell with injury and wished he’s been able to play more of a part in Town’s last two campaigns.

He said: “I wanted to thank the fans for the first few months and obviously for standing by me and not giving up on me.

“I really enjoyed my time and I’m sure when you get back to where you belong I will look back and be proud to have played for the club.”

While heartbroken to have left the club, Kovacswas grateful he was told early so he could get his affairs in order.

He said: “One side of me was disappointed at the amount of opportunities I had. But on the other side what he (John Still) said was fully understandable.

“He had to change everything around in the football club and this is part of football and I can understand what he said.

“It was a massive disappointment because I’ve always said my time at Luton I loved and still love the football club to bits.

“I knew the decision nice and early so I can set myself up for the next challenge and hopefully next season I can find another good club and another home and then I can hopefully be back to my best.”

While Dance experienced an injury-hit stay, Kovacs’ back and hamstring injuries came at just the wrong time as he said: “When he said to me I wouldn’t be offered a new contract I wasn’t 100 per cent fit.

“It settled down and I was coming back. I was forcing myself to get back and get a few games and show to the new manager what Janos Kovacs is all about.

“Unluckily this injury needs more time and a back injury isn’t that quick.

“It was a very disappointing injury. If you look at my whole career I didn’t really have too many injuries. This was one of them and I can say easily the unluckiest one with the timing.

“I’m already hungry for the next challenge. I’ve already charged my battery and if the new season kicked off next week I would be ready.”

But Kovacs is careful that he get gets the right move, adding: “Sometimes it can go away from you if you do not have positive feelings, too much money and then you can be in a comfortable situation and too relaxed.

“One thing is for sure, Janos Kovacs will be hungry for football.”
