After the hosts went into the break 2-0 ahead, Town dominated the second period and cut the deficit through Paul Benson.

But Butcher, who began his career at Spurs, then made superb saves from Andy Parry, Benson, Alex Lawless and Zane Banton as Hatters couldn’t find an equaliser.

Day said: “I thought the first half performance was great and we had to dig in second half because they came at us.

“But I thought Butcher pulled off four or five really good saves at the end.

“It’s always going to be hard against a club as big as Luton, but we knew when Butcher came to us at the beginning of the season what a good keeper he was.

“It was always going to happen, in cup games teams throw people forward and we had to deal with it.”

After looking comfortable in the opening exchanges, Hatters then fell apart once Lee Clarke opened the scoring on 28 minutes, as the hosts took advantage to net again before the break.

Day added: “I thought we played really well first half.

“We could easily have gone three up and if that had been the case, it would have been a lot easier second half.

“But they got one after half time and that gave them confidence.

“Credit to Luton, as they had a really good go second half and might feel a little bit unlucky they haven’t got something.

“When we play these big clubs we have got to try and raise our game and compete with them.

“I felt we did that, we have done that all season and that has got to continue.”
