Cullen hoping to lead from the front

Town striker Mark Cullen believes he is coming into form just at the right time for Saturday’s Skrill Premier opener at Southport, writes Mike Simmonds.

The 21-year-old netted twice as Hatters hammered an Arsenal XI 7-0 on Saturday, making it four goals during the pre-season campaign.

That saw him finish Town’s warm-up as the leading scorer and Cullen said: “The only way to get sharp in front of goal is being in front of goal.

“You might miss a couple, but luckily I’ve scored a few as well.

“As a striker you get viewed on your goals. Luckily for me it’s been going in, hopefully it can continue over the season.”

On the Arsenal match, Cullen continued: “They’re obviously technically very good players as they’re not at Arsenal for a reason.

“Once we got in and around them, found our rhythm and started pressing, we shut them off and they didn’t really threaten our goal.

“They can keep the ball all they want in midfield. Credit to all the lads for letting them do that.”

The striker had to come off the previous weekend against Dagenham & Redbridge, but declared himself fighting fit for this weekend’s clash.

He said: “It was just a kick on my ankle and shin, so it was bruised and swollen. I had to come off and get it right as the season is starting and I didn’t want to miss anything.”

Meanwhile, on his new acquisition, boss Still said: “He’s been a find. He’s a very, very clever player, a bright player and has fitted in really well, to be fair most of them.”
