Creighton hopes Willmott miss gives Wrexham a lifeline

WREXHAM defender Mark Creighton is hoping that Robbie Willmott’s late miss at Kenilworth Road could prove pivotal in the Blue Square Bet Premier play-off semi-final second leg tomorrow, writes Mike Simmonds.

With time running out and Town leading 2-0, Hatters broke away at pace and Andre Gray squared a delightful ball across the area for Willmott.

The speedy winger could have taken a touch and picked his spot, but opted to shoot first time, and only succeeded in somehow picking out Red Dragons keeper Joslain Mayebi.

Creighton said: “It could have been a lot worse, I think it was Robbie who missed that one-on-one at the end. He only had to put it either side and it could have been game over, but maybe that’s a decisive turning point in the game. He didn’t and we go to our place 2-0.

“That’s got to give us a fighting chance. Two-nil is a dangerous scoreline, anyone who’s played in the game, even if you go in at half time at 2-0, manager’s will say it’s a dangerous scoreline because the next goal is massive. If we get that, then game on.”

Wrexham were in a similar position at this time last year, with Town romping to a 3-0 win at the Racecourse Ground in the first leg.

The second fixture at Kenilworth Road saw Dragons pull one back through Andy Mangan early on, then miss a penalty as Hatters eventually calmed the nerves to win 2-1 and move through 5-1 on aggregate.

Creighton, who played in both legs, added: “Look at last year. We were 3-0 down and came here and we rocked this place.

“We went 1-0 up and then missed a penalty. They were on the ropes, the fans had come here but they were on the ropes.

“We didn’t have the bounce of the ball and it could have been so different and that was at 3-0.

“We’ve got the advantage of taking them back to our place as well where our fans will come out in numbers and they’ll try and push us over the line.”
