Congratulations come flooding in for Hatters’ promotion

Luton Town finally ended five years of hurt as they won promotion back into the Football League on Tuesday night.

Cambridge United’s 2-0 defeat at Kidderminster Harriers meant the Town will take their place in League Two for the 2014-15 campaign.

On the final whistle, the messages of congratulations from former players, current players and supporters came flooding in via Twitter.

Ex-boss Mick Harford tweeted: “Congratulations to Luton Town FC on their return to the FL. Hats off to the fans, staff and players. #sentenceover.”

Former defender Curtis Davies said: “Congratulations to the Hatters @LTFC_Official on becoming Champions and finally returning to the Football League where they belong #LTFC,” while ex-striker John Hartson tweeted: “Congratulations to Luton Town FC on their return to the FL. Hats off to the fans, staff and players.”

Ex-England goalkeeper David James, now on the coaching staff at Kenilworth Road, said: “The Hatters are back in the football league! Superb effort by all connected to the club, to a fan!! #coyh, while former defender Emmerson Boyce, who plays for Wigan, said: “Congratulations to Luton FC. On winning promotion as champions. Back in the league where they belong.”

Town legend Marvin Johnson tweeted: “At last finally congrats to everyone connected with Luton Town FC from across the waters here in the US! Well Done.”

Past players Claude Gnakpa and Chris Coyne also sent messages as Gnakpa said: “Congratulation to Luton town, the players and the staff to be crowned champion and get the promotion to the Football league and to the fans for their great support during this 5 long years,” while Coyne added: “Congratulations to all @LTFC_Official players, staff and @LutonTownFans.”

A delighted former striker Steve Howard said: “Congrats to all concerned at LTFC. Back where you belong!!!!!!” and former News/Gazette player of the year Janos Kovacs added: “Luton is back!!! Very well done everyone. :) COYH.”

It wasn’t just the footballing world who showed their support as James Bond actor Colin Salmon tweeted: “A genuinely great day for a great town. To all who support the town Congratulations,” while England cricket Monty Panesar added: “Waited 5 years for this day, back to league football!!! BOOM.”
