Guttridge joined on a free in the summer, while Benson was snapped up on a long-term loan during August.

Charles, who left the club last week, said: “The key signings for me were Paul Benson and Gutts coming in. When Gutts dropped out there was a big, big difference in creativity and his goals. I’ve played with him in a couple of teams now, he’s a fantastic player with what he adds to the team and when he’s taken out of the team you notice.

“Benson too, he came in and added something else that was needed.”

The addition of Benson also helped bring the best out of star striker Andre Gray, who after not scoring for his first nine games, went on to finish as the division’s golden boot winner with 30 goals.

The forward has confirmed he will sign for Hatters after being released by Swindon now, with Charlies believing Benson can continue for another few seasons.
