Buckle praises character as Town down Matlock

Hatters boss Paul Buckle praised his side’s character as they reached the FA Trophy third round with a last-gasp 2-1 win over Matlock this afternoon, writes Mike Simmonds.

Town had taken the lead through Simon Ainge’s header from a corner, before the hosts were level in the second period through a highly contentious penalty.

But Jon Shaw popped up in injury time to volley the winner as Buckle said: “We hit the post, hit the bar, the keeper’s pulled off a wonderful save from (Jake) Howells and it looked like it was going to be a draw.

“I couldn’t believe my eyes when the ref gave a penalty, I certainly don’t think it was a penalty. But fair play to the lads, they didn’t feel sorry for themselves, they kept going, we had great support again and got the win.

“It was nice to get that winning feeling back, a lot of people turned up expecting an upset, rightly so because Matlock have proved to be tough opposition, but we put them to bed and deserved to go through.”
