Buckle hopeful McNulty deal not the last piece of business on deadline day

Town boss Paul Buckle is still looking to add to his squad as the transfer window draws to a close this evening, writes Mike Simmonds.

The Hatters chief has already signed Fleetwood defender Steve McNulty on a free transfer, but speaking to the press this afternoon, he said: “We’ve not had enough clean sheets, we’ve not had enough leaders and McNulty hopefully plus another one will sort that out

“I want to add to the squad. I feel we’ve got enough skill and pace in the team with Dave Martin joining and (Scott) Neilson, what we lacked was leadership.

“I think we need another one as well. I think (Lathaniel) Rowe-Turner has been doing a magnificent job at centre half, I really do, but they’ve been different games.

“Snoop’s record in the team is brilliant, but he’s a left back by trade and the one thing I keep coming back to is the leadership side of it.

“We’ve been really good in the middle of the park and upfront, but we’ve got to try and sort it out (defensively).

“If you look at all the goals we’ve conceded this season, nine times out of 10, teams don’t have to work hard for goals against us.

“The game’s beautiful when it’s on the floor, a nice pitch, but when you go up to Grimsby on a Tuesday night, where there’s no cameras, and nothing nice about it, you’ve got to stick your head in where it hurts, and be nasty.

I’m not mincing my words with players now. We’re going all out now to get as high up the league as possible and to the top, so I’m very honest with the players about it.”

One position that Buckle isn’t looking to strengthen now is the full back area after seeing target Yassin Moutaouakil join League One Portsmouth last week.

He continued: “Not at moment no, I think Taylor coming back has been a big plus for me. He can go to right back so we’re okay there.”

Despite Town’s budget increasing with the £200k they received for the Millwall tie being televised, that hasn’t affected any negotiatians as Buckle added: “We’ve not bought anyone and I don’t see us buying anyone in this window.

“Steve’s finished up with Fleetwood where he’s done an unbelievable job and I hope he can come here and emulate that.”
