Buckle delighted by exceptional Hatters

Hatters boss Paul Buckle felt his side produced an ‘exceptional’ performance as they confidently despatched Alfreton Town 3-0 at Kenilworth Road yesterday, writes Mike Simmonds.

After being frustrated throughout the first period, Town hit back with three goals in the space of five second half minutes to move to within four points of new leaders Grimsby Town.

A delighted Buckle said: “I thought we were exceptional, outstanding all over the pitch. You start with the work-rate and desire of the team, it was there.

“Sometimes you can set up tactically, but if you haven’t got the heart and desire you haven’t got a chance.

“The team really were at it, the midfield four were excellent, back four solid and we caused them an awful amount of problems all day.”

Reds boss Nicky Law felt the visitors paid the price for losing their concentration after half time as he added: “We let three goals in and had a mad four minutes. If you’re going to come to places like this with the quality players they’ve got, you’re going to pay the price unless you’re switched on.”

The victory sets Town up nicely for the trip to former table-toppers Newport County on Tuesday night, with the Welsh side losing 3-2 at Kidderminster as Buckle added: “If the team plays like it did, with that spirit and heart and desire, that coupled with the skill we have in the team, we’ll take some stopping.

“We know we’ll be pushed on on Tuesday by a great following again, and the players and me are desperate for some success.”
