Buckle believes Twitter exposes players’ weaknesses

Town chief Paul Buckle believes his players’ time would be better spent away from Twitter and other social media outlets, writes Mark Wood.

Buckle has been left baffled by the increasing number of footballers venting their feelings and frustrations on the internet.

He said: “I know you’ve got to move with the times, I don’t want to sound old, I’ve got teenage children myself and of course you have to move with the times.

“But, I’m not on Twitter, I’m not on Facebook, maybe that makes me boring, I don’t know...

“I don’t understand it and I think it’s a big weakness with players.

“If a player goes on and wants to tell the world, tweet what’s gone wrong, or what’s happened, or I’m not in the team, or the manager’s not picking me, I think it’s a weakness I do.

“I think you should knock on the manager’s door, or you should maybe take something up, a hobby or something. It’s not for me at all.”

He revealed a number of fans had brought inappropriate posts to his attention and would like to see its use banned.

Buckle added: “I’ve had things sent to me this season that the public have not been happy with that maybe one or two of my players have put out.

“And I can’t do nothing but agree with them. I would ban the lot. I would encourage us to ban it all.

“Anything that brings the club into disrepute, it’s unprofessional. It’s totally, totally unprofessional and if they spent as much time on the training field as they do tweeting they might have a bit more money in their pocket and be in the first team bit more often.

“I’ve sort of tried to deal with this all season to be honest. I’m not being funny, I just can’t understand it.

“Maybe this is what’s been wrong in certain areas at times, where rather than getting down to the real nitty gritty and becoming a man and standing up to mistakes or whatever.

“Do you know what, I don’t know what’s been tweeted this week by any of my players. I wouldn’t know what they’re putting on Facebook.”
