Brill couldn’t look Town’s fans in the eye at Gateshead

Town goalkeeper Dean Brill admitted he couldn’t look at Luton’s travelling supporters after the club’s 5-1 humiliation at Gateshead on Saturday, writes Mike Simmonds.

On the final whistle, Town’s players were marched over to the 126 visiting fans by assistant boss Terry Harris.

Hatters’ followers were quick to let them know what they thought of the performance as Brill said: “I couldn’t look them in the eye, I was absolutely gutted for every single one of them.”

On the game itself, Brill thought Town were in with a chance after Dan Walker made it 2-1, only to see Josh Gillies’ convert a penalty on the stroke of half-time.

He continued: “The first half we were nowhere near it as a team.

“Once we scored, I thought they were rocked a lttle bit, Then they scored just before half time and it gave them that little bit of distance to regroup,

“Three goals in one half though, it shouldn’t be happening. I’ll have to have a look at the goals, analyse it on the DVD. Me and Dimi (Kharine) will sit down and watch it, it was poor and we shouldn’t concede five.

“You can’t just look at the defence, it’s the team as a whole.

“Second half we were improved. I’m not going to say much better, just improved. We took the game to them a little bit more, had three or four decent chances, but like the goal before half time, goals change games.”

Brill himself made some fine saves to keep the score down in the second half as team-mate Dan Walker said: “We’ve come out strong, missed a few chances and maybe if we’d scored maybe one of them back we could have nicked a draw.

“But then they’ve gone and scored another two and if wasn’t for Brilly I’m sure it could have been six or seven or eight.”

With a number of Luton’s players out of contract in the next few weeks, Brill didn’t feel it had anything to do with the performance as he said: “That’s part and parcel of football. Every single game you’re playing for your career, your family, your livelihood.

“If you can’t deal with that pressure then you shouldn’t be in the game. I don’t feel that pressure, it’s football, it’s a cut throat business.

“If you’re not good enough then you’ll be passed on, you’ve just got to keep working and I think that we’ll be okay.

“There have been times when we’ve been close to being right, but it’s been the story of the seaon so far, near misses, near hits, it’s been a tough year.”

Meanwhile, Hatters host Lincoln City this evening and Brill hopes to put on a show for the long suffering home supporters.

He added: “They’ve been fantastic. I’m sure they’ll turn up and it’s down to the boys but not only for the fans but for themselves to put in a good performance.

“We need to finish the season on a high. The manager has said he’s going to make changes, so it’s a chance to impress the fans and the manager.”
