HATTERS boss Gary Brabin is confident that his side’s promotion ambitions are well on track after they hammered fellow title contenders Gateshead 5-1 this afternoon, writes Mike Simmonds.

Doubles from the returning Jake Howells and substitute Jamie Hand, his first for the club, along with fellow replacement Aaron O’Connor netting his debut goal, saw Town comprehensively see off their north east rivals at Kenilworth Road.

Brabin said: “I’m not trying to get too excited when we win games or too despondent when we lose games.

“It was a fantastic scoreline, fantastic performance and I believe we’re going in the right direction.

“It’s a long season. We’re going to have some disappointing results and some disappointing performances from now until the end of the season but as long as we achieve our goal of promotion, which I’m confident of.”

Town’s injury problems continue to persist though as top scorer Amari Morgan-Smith limped off after just 10 minutes, while O’Connor was also taken off as a precuation late on.

Brabin added: “We had to bring Amari off on Tuesday and we were hoping he would be all right.

“Obviously, he went off after about 10 minutes and I brought O’Connor off on Tuesday as he was injured too.

“We brought him (O’Connor) on and he was fantastic for an hour and we’ve had to bring him off to look after him.”

Brabin was remaining tight-lipped whether Morgan-Smith would be fit for Tuesday night’s home clash with league leaders Wrexham though.

He added: “I don’t want to divulge too much about our injury situation. It was disappointing that we lost Amari after 10 minute but we changed our formation and put in a good performance.”
