Brabin: We deserved to knock Northampton out

HATTERS manager Gary Brabin felt his side were worthy winners as Luton made the second round of the FA Cup with a 1-0 win over League Two Northampton Town yesterday, writes Mike Simmonds.

Substitute Adam Watkins netted the only goal of the game on 80 minutes, just five minutes after coming off the bench to secure Town’s place in the hat for this afternoon’s draw.

Brabin said: “I was delighted with the performance, delighted with the result and delighted we’re through to the next round of the cup.

“I think it was a fantastic atmosphere, a great game for the neutral and I suppose both sets of fans have probably enjoyed the game.

“I thought we thoroughly deserved the win.”

Former Premier League referee Andy D’Urso took charge of the match and although Hatters were denied a penalty when Amari Morgan-Smith appeared to be shoved over in the box, Brabin was pleased to have a more experienced official in charge of proceedings.

He said: “One of the things I said tongue in cheek beforehand was that it helps to have a top referee like Andy in charge, I think it makes the game a bit more entertaining.

“You don’t mind that (penalty decision) though as long as it works for both sides. He’s going to make mistakes, we all make mistakes. Overall I thought he was consistent in what he did and gave a good performance.”

Cobblers boss Gary Johnson added: “They’re (Luton) not just any non-league team, they’re doing well, but both teams felt they could get at the other, and it made for a very open game.

“We had several opportunities but we didn’t have the bit of quality to stick the ball in the net. Their goalkeeper didn’t need to make as many saves as he could’ve done.

“We felt we had a very good chance here and that’s why we didn’t sit back. We’re (either) very unlucky at the moment or haven’t quite got the technique.”
