Brabin vows to fight on as Luton boss

EMOTIONAL Town manager Gary Brabin has vowed to fight for his future after witnessing Hatters slump to a hugely embarrassing 3-0 Blue Square Bet Premier defeat at Forest Green Rovers on Tuesday night, writes Mike Simmonds.

The boss has come under increased criticism in recent weeks and was booed off by the 297 travelling fans at the New Lawn, but when asked if he was still the right man to lead Luton this season, he said: “I think so. I haven’t lost faith in the lads.

“We know we can get better and I totally understand people losing their faith, but I genuinely believe this group of players are good enough to get promoted.

“I know it’s difficult, but I ask people keep on supporting and just stay positive and I believe we are going to achieve our goal.”

Brabin sympathised with the reaction of the Hatters fans who made the trip, as they now face real worries to even make a play-off spot this season.

He continued: “I’d like to apologise to the fans. I’m sure they feel embarrassed and let down like I do.

“I totally understand. I feel sick myself. It stays with me as it does with the supporters who’ve followed the club for years.

“I do take pride in my job and we’re falling short. I’m responsible for that, I make the decisions.

“I’m absolutely gutted and all I can say is we know we can turn the corner and if we just grind through this bad feeling, we know we’ll come out the other end.

“I’ve come off and I feel devastated. I just can’t believe it and didn’t think we had that performance in us.”

Brabin also admitted he would have a chat with the club’s owners this week and appreciated they will be coming under increasing pressure to make a change at the helm.

He said: “We discuss things all the time and I know they’ll probably be getting pressure as well from the supporters.

“But they love the club and will do what they think is right.

“I know deep down they know we’re working hard behind the scenes and I’m sure they will have faith in us.

“At the end of the day it’s the supporters we’ve got to try and convince that we’re on course.”

The former Cambridge manager has been in the hot seat at Kenilworth Road for just under a year after replacing Richard Money, winning 23, drawing 21 and losing 10 of his 54 games in charge.

He now faces a massive job to lift not only his side for the visit of fellow play-off chasers Grimsby Town at the weekend, but also himself.

Brabin added: “It’s the job I’ve chosen and it has its highs and lows.

“I try not to be too high when things are going great and I try not to get myself too down.

“I always put myself under pressure, I’m my own worst critic.

“We looked at it a week ago and we were all positive.

“We had a chance of two Wembley visits and were still in a healthy position in the play-offs, but we’ve certainly pressed the self-destruct button between now and then.

“We’re definitely out of one of the Wembley appearances and have made it hard for ourselves with the second.

“We had a meeting and we know it’s not good enough.”
