Brabin understands fans frustration

LUTON Town boss Gary Brabin admitted he could understand the home fans frustrations despite seeing their side defeat Bath City 2-0 on Saturday, writes Mike Simmonds.

Janos Kovacs had put the hosts ahead early on, but there were murmurs of discontent around an edgy Kenilworth Road until Adam Watkins volleyed home a decisive second late on.

When asked about the fans voicing their frustrations even though the hosts were winning, Brabin said: “I can only apologise, I don’t think you can go to any football ground in the world and be guaranteed to perform well every week.

“That’s no excuse though. I totally understand. We work hard every day to try and make it entertaining and win football matches.

“We want to keep improving, we want to keep entertaining, we are in the entertainment business.

“The biggest goal we’ve got collectively as a club, as players and staff is promotion and we’re trying to combine all that together.”

When Kovacs powered home his fourth goal of the season and second in Town’s last two home league games, it was clear the home supporters expected an avalanche against the Conference’s basement side who had lost their last eight and not won away all season.

But it never happened, with Hatters looking disjointed and nervy at times as Brabin continued: “I thought we started bright for the first 15-20 minutes and it was almost as if once we scored the first goal, it was going to be too easy and we stopped as a team doing the good habits that we’re trying to instil in the group.

“We looked sloppy because of it and we’re disappointed because the lads worked hard. Whether a lot’s been made that Bath are bottom of the league and we should beat them, whether that gets into the players heads I don’t know, because you can’t disrespect anyone.

“They’re 11 human beings out there, all going to fight and scrap to impress here and work hard. They put men behind the ball, tried to make it difficult for us, and on top of that we’re a little bit sloppy and it wasn’t good enough.”

Although the Romans appear destined for relegation now, as they are 11 points from safety, with 11 games to go, City boss Adie Britton felt there were signs of improvement.

He said: “When you lose games of football and have a very, very bad run which we’ve had, it’s very easy to just change everything you do, to make change for the sake of change.

“We’ve improved the football team for the last six to seven years, we’re good in control of the football, we’re good passing the ball, we clearly have problems defensively this year.

“We made some individual errors against a good quality side and some poor goals were conceded, we’re clearly not happy about the first one.

“Going forward, we just lacked that little bit of quality. We got in good positions, we’re capable of creating and getting behind people, we just need to be a bit more clinical as a side.

“We’ll work on those things, we’ll just continue to try and improve it and where we end up we end up.”
