Brabin refusing to panic

HATTERS boss Gary Brabin was refusing to ring the alarm bells after his side fell eight points behind Blue Square Bet Premier leaders Wrexham on Tuesday night, writes Mike Simmonds.

Mathias Pogba’s 73rd minute winner was enough for the Red Dragons to earn a 1-0 win at Kenilworth Road, as Luton dropped to fifth in the table.

A defiant Brabin said: “I’m not really one for stats, but most teams who are top by Christmas don’t go on to win it.

“I think Oxford were something like eight points clear, probably even more at this stage a few years ago, and ended up going through the play-offs.

“I’m not hiding away from the fact that we haven’t got three points and I’m disappointed we haven’t got more points on the table.

“But having said that, no leagues are won and lost in October, there is still a long way to go and we know we can get better.

“It’s a tough league. I don’t think you can disrespect any of the teams.

“There are no easy games. We’ve got some big players still to come back for us and we’re still in and around the pack.”

Despite being top of the league, Wrexham displayed some of the most outrageous time-wasting tactics witnessed at Kenilworth Road this season, even when the scores were goalless.

First, goalkeeper Joslain Mayebi tried to run the clock down as early as the 65th minutes, while Pogba feigned injury moments after scoring, before having to sheepishly return to the fray when play wasn’t halted.

Brabin added: “I don’t even have to speak about that.

“I think everyone’s seen that, but we don’t want be using that as an excuse.

“It could have been controlled a bit better and the referee could have pulled them a little bit earlier, but they don’t seem to do that too often.

“Teams will come here to frustrate us though and we’ve got to rise above that. At worst, we should be coming away from here with a nil-nil.”
