Brabin pleased with Luton response

HATTERS boss Gary Brabin felt his side showed the required response after Tuesday night’s terrible defeat at Forest Green Rovers during their 1-1 draw with Grimsby Town yesterday, writes Mike Simmonds.

Town had looked like the would take all three points when new signing Andre Gray netted on 60 minutes, but a late equaliser by Kiernan Hughes-Mason meant Hatters have now gone six games without a win in all competitions.

Brabin said: “I thought we dominated the game. We definitely got a response and were a hell of a lot better than what we showed on Tuesday and that was more like it.

“When we got that goal up I thought it was our just rewards, but we don’t seem to be able to get that little big of luck at the moment.”

The boss had words of praise for new recruit Gray as he swivelled to score from Keith Keane’s cross on the hour mark and looked lively throughout his debut.

He continued: “Andre showed exactly why we signed him. He worked tirelessly and has got a goal in him. I thought he looked a threat all afternoon.”

Despite the point, Luton dropped to fifth in the table, behind Southport, and are just three points ahead of York City, who they meet in a crucial clash at Kenilworth Road on Friday night.

Brabin again received a torrent of abuse as he left the field, with many supporters calling for him to go, but he still believed he was the right man for the job, adding: “I’m disappointed with the response, but we’re still on course for promotion.

“Grimsby have gained a lot of ground and are pushing, while we’ve gained a point on Mansfield and Forest Green, who beat us last week, have gone and beat Wrexham.

“It’s a tough league. We’ve got no divine right to win games convincingly. It’s going to be tough.

“We all want the same thing and that’s promotion. I can assure everyone of them I am doing my utmost to achieve that and I just ask them to be patient and support us.”

Meanwhile, Grimsby joint boss Rob Scott praised his side for their never say die attitude as he said: “We came with a game-plan and started with a formation, which is a little bit different from normal, and we stuck our hands up after 15 minutes and said that it wasn’t really working.

“We went to a more solid four-four-two and everybody knew their jobs.

“The attitude of the players was first class, they never know when they’re beaten.”
