Brabin explains Watkins omission

HATTERS boss Gary Brabin believes midfielder Adam Watkins is in a ‘good place’ right now despite starting the last three games on the substitutes bench, writes Mike Simmonds.

Although the 20-year-old scored in his last two matches for England C and the Hatters in brief cameos, impressing Brabin with the way he helped change the game against Bath City at the weekend, he was an unused substitute during the 2-0 defeat at Wrexham on Wednesday night.

Brabin said: “Adam is in a good place at the moment. He’s done really well and was definitely in our thoughts. We want to have him really right and I think we’ve managed him really well.

“He was itching to play, and was unlucky not to start, but we had to change our preparation (due to Stuart Fleetwood’s injury) and we went for a bit of experience as we haven’t been able to work on stuff.

“It hasn’t worked though and I’m disappointed, but Adam is in a good place.”

Winger Robbie Willmott is another who has been in and out of the side in recent weeks, but looked to be regaining some of his form from last season in the second 45 minutes after coming off the bench as he was a constant threat on the right flank.

Brabin added: “I thought the real shining light for me was Robbie Willmott’s performance.

“Robbie’s been a little bit off form over the Christmas period and we’ve bedded him in gently. He’s getting more and more confident and the one plus for me was his performance.”
