Brabin explains Carden selection

STICKING to type was manager Gary Brabin’s reason for recalling first team coach Paul Carden to the starting XI for Tuesday night’s 2-2 draw at Ebbsfleet United, writes Mark Wood.

The Town boss had intimated that the 32-year-old would only be used in reserve games or in an emergency and Brabin cited the lack of a defensive midfielder for handing Carden his first start of the season.

On his selection, Brabin said: “It’s difficult because I know the fans haven’t taken to Paul.

“We tried to keep the same system we were successful with against Kidderminster on Saturday and Paul’s the only type who is defensive minded.

“We’ve only got Adam Watkins and young (John-Paul) Kissock who aren’t really suited to that role.

“I think the fans voiced their frustration with Paul. We are 2-0 up and I can hear the frustration about Paul playing. The job’s difficult enough with some of the injuries we’ve got.

“He has gone in there to fill a role while we’ve got the suspensions, international calls and injuries.”
