Brabin bemoans poor second half performance

HATTERS boss Gary Brabin felt his side paid the price for a poor second half display as they were held to a 1-1 draw at fellow promotion chasers Cambridge United on Saturday, writes Mike Simmonds.

Town had led through Stuart Fleetwood’s fourth goal of the season and looked the dominant force in the opening period.

But after the interval, as has become a worrying feature of Hatters play this season, especially away from home, they didn’t press on and were caught out with 13 minutes left as Liam Hughes was on hand to equalise.

Brabin said: “I’m disappointed to have conceded the way we did. Second half we didn’t play anywhere near as well as we did in the first half.

“I felt we sat back a bit and in the end they’ve got a deserved equaliser.

“I was really pleased with the first half, it was a good solid performance. I thought we played some good football, created a few chances, but it’s the same old story, 1-0 is never enough.

“Second half we never got going. They (Cambridge) seemed to be on the front foot and seemed to get stronger and stronger as the half wore on.

“We still had a couple of good chances to make it 2-0, we haven’t done and eventually they’ve equalised.”

United boss Jez George added: “What pleased me was it wasn’t just about character or fighting spirit, but the quality of our football. In the second half, we looked like a football team.”
