Boss Buckle hails Town’s efforts in Woking victory

Pleased Hatters boss Paul Buckle praised Luton’s attacking mentality as they scored an impressive 3-1 victory over Woking yesterday, writes Mark Wood.

Janos Kovacs’ powerful header and Jon Shaw’s predatory strike had put Town in control at the break and, although stand-in striker Joe McNerney, pushed up from the back, struck midway through the second half to cause a few jitters, striker Scott Rendell netted his fourth successful penalty of the season to seal victory late on.

Buckle said: “If I start talking about when it was at 2-1 I would fast-forward about 60 minutes of dominance. I don’t really want to do that.

“I think we were in total control. 2-0 is a precarious scoreline. We know we need to get the third.

“I think it was the first shot Mark (Tyler) had to deal with and it ends up in the back of the net.

“That’s tough to take, but the one thing we did was showed great courage and character to go down the other end, to go up a gear again and deservedly win the game in the end.”

But it was energetic and skilful striker Andre Gray who again starred ahead of the January transfer window.

Buckle continued: “Andre had licence today. We started him on the right, he was on the left for the cross in and he was down the middle for when he hit the post.

“So we had good variety in our game. We were bold in our approach at the start with playing the four strikers.

“It’s worked for us before you know, whenever I’ve played that system before we’ve let ourselves down from a set-play, been sloppy.

“But we weren’t today. We looked dangerous, we should have had more goals.”

And the victory was all the more important with almost every other team in and around the Hatters also tasting victory.

Buckle added: “The players knew the situation and they showed courage and nerve.

“It’s very easy at times places like Kenilworth Road, it’s a big ground, we’ve got new players, to get nervous and apprehensive but they didn’t.

“We are performing well. That’s four wins at home now in a row and we’ve just got to keep it going.”
