Benson opened his account by nodding home Alex Lawless’ pinpoint cross on 30 minutes, with Luton’s first goal in the opening half of a game this season.

He said: “I was really pleased with it, I felt it was coming tonight (Tuesday).

“I hadn’t in previous games, and after Wrexham, I didn’t know where to put myself as I didn’t think it was going to happen.

“But I felt good from the start, there were some good balls in early, and the ball from Alex was different class.

“I couldn’t miss and it was nice to get one I could just put my head to and see it going in.

“I was looking for the corner, but even got myself a little bit worried when I saw it creeping towards the post as they can bounce out.

“It’s good to get off the mark and hopefully the start of a run for myself.”

Although Benson had failed to net in his opening three matches, he felt it was important he didn’t alter any aspect of his game that has seen him enjoy a prolific goalscoring career.

He continued: “I was pleased that I didn’t try and change too much when I didn’t score in the first few games.

“You have a tendency to try and get on the ball too much in certain areas where you don’t need to be. I just needed to stick to my position in the box, and just wait for the ball.

“There were three or four decent crosses which in a couple of weeks down the line I’ll be able to get on to better.”

The 33-year-old on-loan Swindon forward still feels he is short of showing his true colours too as he said: “I don’t feel 100 per cent yet.

“I had a slight groin injury from overwork in the first couple of weeks I was here.

“I had to sit out a few days which I didn’t want to do, but I had to be a little bit professional and look after myself.

“There’s still a lot of work I need to do in front of goal, my foot eye co-ordination when the ball comes into the box and I need to quicken my feet up.”

Meanwhile, Town boss John Still added: “I think as he gets fitter, Paul Benson is just bringing so many people into the game with his movement.

“His touch is good, work-rate is good, he’s just beginning to get properly fit now, which is good as he’s a very clever player.”
